Five Food Outlets Fined €40,000 for Hygiene Breaches

Five food outlets were fined almost €40,000 plus legal fees after they were prosecuted for breaching food hygiene regulations last month.The largest fine of €21,000 was imposed on Cashel Kebabs, Co Tipperary, for six counts of breaching the food hygiene regulations.

Superquinn in Finglas, Dublin 11, was fined €5,000 in respect of a single offence and also agreed to pay legal costs of €2,000 for an offence identified on July 6, 2010. Miller’s Pizza, on Baggot Street, Dublin 4, was fined €9,000. Owners Trendmount Trading Ltd were also ordered to pay legal costs of €1,100. The Natural Foods Bakery in Blackrock, Cork, was fined a total of €2,200 in respect of two summons. Owners Orla O’Byrne and Roddy Henderson were also ordered to pay legal costs of €1,400. Marguerite’s Bakery in Newcastlewest, Limerick, was also found guilty of breaching food hygiene regulations in the flour products area only. The premises was fined €600 each on four counts, with two counts taken into consideration, following an inspection on June 15, 2010. The judge also awarded the HSE legal fees of €1,400.

Meanwhile, three out of four restaurants closed for breaches of food safety last month were in Boyle, Co Roscommon. These orders may be made where environmental health officers believe there is a grave and immediate danger to public health at the premises. Closure orders were served on the Tai Chi Court restaurant, of Bridge Street, Boyle, on November 25 and lifted on December 3; on the Royal Hotel (kitchen, cafe and external food stores), Boyle, on November 9 and lifted on November 11; and on M&K Mireks Restaurant, of The Crescent, Boyle, on November 4 and lifted on November 10.

Elsewhere a closure order was also served on 3-in-1 Charcoal Grill takeaway, 20 Northgate Street, Athlone, Co Westmeath, on November 18 and lifted on December 3.
